Evesham, a glorious place to enter the English Cotswolds
Evesham was called the Gate of the Cotswolds, and is an ideal center for exploring the beautiful landscape.
Almost equidistant between Worcester, Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon, located on the River Avon in the fertile Vale of Evesham - still known for fruit growing and the horticulture - the city offers an ideal environment for freshwater fishing, fishing, boating and riverside walks. Boats can also be hired for a day for short to explore the waterways of charm of the Cotswolds.
History
Evesham can trace its existence back to the 8th century. Evesham The name derives from "EOF ham ham (" "Names in English meaning" homestead "). EF (or Eoves) was a humble swineherd, who had a vision of the Virgin Mary and has reported his experience Bishop of San Ecgwynn third of Worcester.
Ecgwin also had a vision when he visited place, and the Benedictine abbey founded there in 709 Evesham. When it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540, the abbey has been estimated in the 3rd largest and most powerful in England, and smaller abbeys and churches funded in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. An important source of income came from pilgrims to the abbey.
A thriving town grew up around the abbey, and here, August 4, 1265 to Simon de Montfort, known as the father of English Parliament, and its alliance rebellious barons were defeated at the Battle of Evesham by royalist forces in Prince Edward (later Edward I).
De Montfort was killed in battle and his remains buried before the altar of the abbey church. A modest stone monument in the park is now Montford place where the burial took place.
Attractions in Evesham
Much of the abbey was dismantled and sold as a stone building, leaving little but the twin churches of All Saints and St. Lawrence and the fine 16th century bell tower to the left on the walls of the Abbey. Abbey Park and its adjacent coastal meadows are now the place for fairs, concerts, river activities and Evesham.
There are a number of other houses of historical interest of the city, including a fine 15th century timber merchants house called the Round House (now a bank), town house of the late 17th century, Dresden House, once occupied by Dr Baylies, physician to Frederick the Great of Prussia, and an old mansion, formerly owned by King Canute.
No visit to Evesham is complete without a visit to the Chaplaincy - dating from 1400 that was once the home of Evesham Abbey Chaplain, and remains a shining example of early English architecture. Currently houses a Tourist Information Office and Heritage Center, and excellent social history museum of the city and Valley Evesham.
