Hello from Nova Scotia - Part 6 - The cemetery, Annapolis Tour

After a full day of exploration and a nice dinner at the Garrison House, I was ready for my latest discovery of the day: the famous cemetery in Annapolis Tour. At 9:15 pm I showed in the way of my bed and breakfast at the southern entrance to Fort Anne where local historian and expert guide Alan Melanson was ready to give their performance. Approximately 15 people from places like North Carolina, California and Saskatchewan, were equipped with candles and lanterns after a brief introduction we were ready to head.

Alan informed us that his unit was a burial suit real black belt and a black scarf tied around their hats were symbols of mourning. We have learned that when children died the scarf on the cover should be white. Alan told the group that has made this trip four nights a week, every week from June to October for 15 years and has lost only one night. Donation of $ 7 for the tour continues to the Annapolis Historical Society, and over the years, Alan has collected approximately $ 60,000 for this nonprofit organization. Alan has been a park ranger and guide in the Fort Anne National Historic Site about 27 years and on the historical interpretation which is also the awareness of reliving history local classes.

We started walking towards the cemetery, from top to bottom of Fort Anne "earthmoving, construction of fortifications Mound of land to protect potential intruders Annapolis . The cemetery is located just steps from Fort Anne, and Alan received the largest group of objects waste, an obelisk and started the official tour.

Our first stop was the oldest headstone in the cemetery dating from 1720, which belonged to a woman 37. Alan explained that the tombs have a lot of symbolism of death is shown, for example a skull with wings, young children and babies who dead would be symbolized by images of flowers, lambs or rosebuds. Sauces are often used to represent death and mourning. Alan also taught us that different types of stone were used as tomb stones over the centuries: the slate, sandstone, granite and marble have been used to immortalize the dead.

Many residents of the cemetery had interesting stories: a 83-year-old trap of his fortune by a bad husband. Some soldiers were also buried Alan here and light on life in the army in the 18th century: 100 men, only six are allowed to bring their wives during deployments of England in the colonies. The wives and children were allowed to enter and do not be so, since they share beds with their husbands. Conditions for the soldiers only changed during the Crimean War, when the press has made known to the general public from the adverse effects of life for soldiers, provoking widespread outrage. The power of the press was already evident in the 1850 ...

We also learned that large groups of volunteers to clean the headstones, carefully using the tools of wood and foam Soap zero and then complete the task with a solution of vinegar and water. Alan reported that very few acts of vandalism that happens here in this graveyard of history from the locals are very proud of their heritage. In the ninth generation Acadian, as a historical interpreter Fort Anne and as the President of the Historical Society of Annapolis , Alan Melanson can personally attest to the importance and recognition of history that characterizes this region. Annapolis is the largest district of wealth composed of 135 national heritage buildings, including the oldest and the oldest stone National Historic Site of Canada.

Pride in the Local history also includes reconstructions of historical events and lifestyles. Alan talked about some shows have served the moose nose and tail soup beaver smoked, of course, very similar to those enjoyed in the early 1600s by settlers from Port House, where Wayne Melanson also his twin brother Alan, I was introduced the history of France in the afternoon.

Annapolis is one of the most historic cities of the east coast and the oldest house in the city, just east of the gardens historical, dating back to 1708. Alan explained the history The city was founded around the shipbuilding docks and 13 are still in existence. Homes of 234 headstones in the cemetery of the garrison and 2000 people are buried here. The first settlers of Acadia are also buried here, but their graves have not had the stones - its rotting wooden crosses long distance.

Our local experts also advised us that a soldier was found dates from 1780 buried in the river bed. Based on historical accounts and the technique of burial, the person must have been an offense that is why they are buried in the river. " Alan Melanson himself the ninth generation of Acadia, which can trace its lineage back to one Charles Melanson who are arriving in this area in 1664, certainly has a passion for history and it shows. His theatrical voice to convey enthusiasm for this city's history, and he injected his presentation with humor and wit. Former Prime Minister Paul Martin has also enjoyed its garrison Cemetery Tour with Alan Melanson.

After the visit was over, I went to the lantern and received a certificate attesting that I had attended the Annapolis Graveyard Tour. I returned to the House Barracks B & B and guarded at night in the graveyard, wondering what life must have been in this city in 1700 and 1800. I thought the rest for another day full of explorations of tomorrow, including power generation plant of tides and the Bear River Heritage Center and a stroll on the coast to Yarmouth, on the western edge of the province. Nova Scotia certainly has a lot of history, interesting personalities and fascinating human stories ...
