I did some research in census records, and here are some figures that may help answer your question. One notes on data from 1870 people said: "Revisions to include adjustments for underreporting in southern states show a total (both sexes) from 34,337,292 to 5,392,172 and the white to black." I I like the population in 1870 was 39.7 million euros, with the percentage of blacks on 13.5%.
