Death, meetings, and Crazy inmates: Southern Gothic published in "A Rose for Emily" and "To Kill a Mockingbird
Southern Gothic is a subgenre of American Gothic, which is probably the most familiar to you from the Bronte sisters in Victorian England. (No, not talking Hot Topic here.) Same European than its predecessor, the Southern Gothic style depends heavily on the supernatural - only with less "O, Heathcliffe!" And more "Oh, no, racism "(Unlike Southern Gothic novels Gothic novels are more interested in discovering the crimes and injustices to be dark, for obscure reasons.) grotesque elements are common to both sexes, but may take the form of physical injury, Gore, or just very poor characters that somehow quite natural to stay interesting. (See also: "Oh, Heathcliff!")
William Faulkner is known to be particularly well with the Southern Gothic style, and many American children read his strange and disgusting "A Rose for Emily" as early high school. This story, which begins with a funeral and ends with the discovery decades-old body, remember the life of Miss Emily Grierson, the old city, recently died. As it turns out that his father was a little arrogant, and we do not know if there are abuses, let's say not exactly breaking the curfew until he was about 35. When the old finally meets his creator, Emily refuses to admit he is dead or leave the house for three days - that would not be so terrible if the decomposing bodies do not always are there.
The reptilian part of it, however, is that this is not the body that manages the home of Emily in the back of the book, it belonged to him once short-term boyfriend who Wined her, she ate, and tried to rescue her a few years after his father died. Boy not chosen the wrong woman. While Emily is clearly insane damage, abuse and father psychological scar still make a character sympathetic. While sympathetic, in fact, to help cover the inhabitants of the murder spread lime home when it starts to smell. (Will not You Be My-ca voi!) This summary do something "for Emily"> A Rose for Emily "batteries as a Southern Gothic novel. Death? Check. Injustice? Check. The grotesque? Double check. A scary Close with a mysterious past in a apparently haunted house? Checkmate.
Now that we have an idea of what gender is, let a small comparison. One of the most widely read America and beloved novels of Southern Gothic is "To To Kill a Mockingbird, which describes the interactions of shy children Scout and Jem Finch, local social exclusion Boo Radley. This book can seem particularly Gothic especially if you grew up wanting to be friends with Jem and Scout (or Boo), or have a father, Atticus, but technically speaking, fall. Let's look at these new criteria.
- The supernatural. Well, not so Mockingbird is supernatural, but he said Through the eyes of a fear of six years, could also be. Scary Guy locked in his house for decades, probably because he stabbed his father in the leg with scissors? It is not natural, that's for sure. The only thing keeping Boo to become a full-Emily Grierson is the fact that not hide any body - we know.
- Injustice. Boy Howdy! Almost all characters in the novel is at least somewhat racist, including our amiable narrator, from time to time. The intrigue around the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man who is wrongly accused - and eventually convicted - Of raping a white woman - Who invented the story to hide her crush on Tom, an abusive parent. When Tom tries to escape from prison, was killed no less that seventeen times. You know, just in case.
- The grotesque. Although To Kill a Mockingbird is not bloody, some characters may be totally wrong. Mrs. Dubose is an excellent example of a grotesque character is a fan of old with an attitude unnecessarily humorless possessive toward his camellias, but as we discovered later, she tries to kick a morphine addiction bad, end up feeling so bad for her. Sometimes a drug or an authoritarian father is all you need.
Thus, while the two stories may seem very different at first glance, they share a particular combination Gothic elements enabling them to explore social issues unglamorously cultural and South - both racism and sectarianism or the only approach obsolescence "Southern Belle" to exit. You decide which is fear.
