Windows Server 2003 - Why is it better to establish a domain instead of a working group?
For our small business we are about to configure a server running Windows Server 2003. We have 4 PC client that will link to the server. We use the server to 1) Execute SQL our software based on accounting based, 2) act as a file server for storage of Excel, Word, files, etc.. Why is better than one area instead of a working group? What is a domain we can do a working group would not let us do?
First, the use of server 2003 for small business is a mistake. You must use Small Business Server 2003. It can accommodate up to 75 users (sufficient for growth) and comes with many bells and whistles, built in 2003 as standard no. (Includes SQL in the Premium version). Here the benefits of a domain. 1. File and Network Security. You simply can not adequately secure files in a workgroup. With a domain, you can get very granular in the files that are shared, you can access, modify, etc. with SQL, security is virtually impossible without a domain. 2. Active Directory. Can not say enough about this tool. Manage users, computers, printers and other devices ... define authorization, real ... It can be as simple or as complex as you want to. 3. The Group's policy. You can ensure that all equipment is the date with the latest patches, etc. You can make sure all are up date virus protection. You can create login scripts to map drives, sharing resources, etc. You can manage security policies for marking password policies, etc instead of managing each computer user, you can manage all groups in one place. 4. Exchange. You can host your own email, share calendars, access your e-mail, files and information from anywhere with any team. 5. Routing and Remote Access. You can control who, where and when users can access their network remotely. Feeling faint? Remote Web Workplace allows you to work at home equally productive than it could in the office. But Joe, a very reliable, sensitive data can not be downloaded onto your computer at home ... ever. 6. SharePoint Services. A central location to share information with colleagues, clients or potential clients. This is an area of principle. Request the difference between a domain and a workgroup is like asking the difference between a plane and a 747. Both will take you to where you want to go ... over time. But in terms of comfort, convenience and extra features there is absolutely no comparison.
