olympus?.. u are an idiot. i like to surf clips regarding throwing etc. iv’e been a thrower for over 25 years and this clip is without a doubt one of the worst demo’s i have seen. i have worked in some of the most frenetic and revered potterys in the world using extruded de-aired clays,ie: no wedging or kneading but i always cone it.
like the simon leach’s , guy wolffs etc..
post your vid and let us decide who the moron is? i for one would love to see your “junk”.

sk9er123 June 28, 2010 at 5:30 am

i agree with harshaw for sure.. i could have thrown two goblets before he got centered.. this is for sure a clumsy method if u are a production or fast repeat thrower.. this is a sure fire way to end up a physical wreck,, expert village?
methinks more like village idiot..

@cardsman44
On Ebay you can buy anything!

olympusTITAN June 28, 2010 at 6:33 am

you srsly sound like such a moron. you obviously have to use the cone to get out your bubbles because you are not nearly good enough to get all of the bubbles out when wedging, which is quite a simple task, even for beginniers. but i guess you havent reached my level of expertise yet. good luck with your junk and stuff.

cardsman44 June 28, 2010 at 6:54 am

where do you buy potery wheels

HarshawJ June 28, 2010 at 7:41 am

I noted this comment to students, Small balls of clay can be manhandled (although I would encourage students to cone up and compress down to center because this conditioning of the clay helps remove air bubbles) but after you have developed some skills. You are a poor teacher for not noting this and understanding you are demonstrating to beginners. After all, experienced throwers are not going to bother with this video, it is basic. (My condolences to the new thrower trying this method.)

olympusTITAN June 28, 2010 at 8:30 am

i have learned both ways and using muscle is much better than the whole cone thing. i did the cone for years and then tried this way and it is soooooo much easier.

HarshawJ June 28, 2010 at 9:10 am

Students, please note this is NOT a standard way of centering. Not people I know do not manhandle the clay to center it which is exactly what is happening here. Using a coning up and then compressing down is better, easier, and conditions the clay like wedging. Also, coning up and compressing down does not require manhandling the clay.

This is a bad example of centering because there is no explanation as to why the clay is centering. See Simon Leach on centering… much better.
