Michael Perlowin innovates with innovative and enjoyable music and, surprisingly, made mainly on the pedal steel guitar.
As for his forays into the world of Debussy, Stravinsky and Broadway with albums Firebird Suite and West Side Story, Michael Perlowin is overwhelming yet the stereotype of the pedal steel guitar as a country-and-western-only instrument. In his new album, Spanish Steel, featuring 20 tracks from or about Spain, with works by Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz, Joaquin Rodrigo, Julio Martinez Oyanguren, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
This new album sees Perlowin still toggle between using the pedal steel as star A and a global instrument. However, this disk includes Perlowin guitar work over their previous outings, the guitar is an integral part of Spanish music. It is fair to say this is not so much an "album pedal steel guitar, as it is a music album in which the steel is predominantly featured for its unique expressive sound.
Perlowin, a guitarist veteran of the folk scene and rock music around LA, became enamored of the pedal steel guitar unexpectedly after you are working in a country and the western to mid 70. The passion blossomed into an all-consumers love story, an intensely passionate obsession that continues to this day. Perlowin jokingly calls himself a steel addict, "adding that the complexities and mysteries of the instrument cause most other players feel the same.
As a guitarist, played Perlowin virtually all types of popular music, standards, folk, rock, country, blues, reggae and even disco. Reproduction pedal steel guitar, however, found that Perlowin was unhappy when confined to country and western music. Finally, the World Cup has brought classical music Perlowin's. A recording of "Lady of Debussy with blond hair" by guitarist Jazz Johnny Smith discovered the world of literate music. Perlowin explains: "When I heard this song, I realized it was I wanted to play." Perlowin own recordings of the piece, which clearly shows Smith's influence can be heard on his first classical album Pedal Steel Firebird Suite.

Perlowin had been slightly exposed to classical music when I was young and had no musical training or formal production. Perlowin second album, West Side Story, shows no growth as a player, because he had already mastered the instrument, but as producer, arranger and sound engineer.
However, with this third album that his mastery of recording studio blossomed to match his talent as a virtuoso musician. Spanish Steel, Dave Beyer played drums and percussion, while Bill Watkins contributed timpani samples to complement Perlowin pedal and lap steel guitars, electric and acoustic guitars, fretless and low draft, sitar, mandolin, Mandocello, 5-string banjo, autoharp and additional percussion.
Spanish steel is an album completely original and unique Perlowin ambition to showcase the beauty and the expressiveness of the pedal steel guitar.
